실험진은 어린 쥐와 연령대 든 쥐의 모낭줄기세포에 형광물질을 붙여 분열 과정을 관찰했다. 그 결과 어린 쥐에서는 대칭과 비대칭 분열의 균형이 잘 이뤄졌지만, 나이 든 쥐에서는 비대칭 분열의 비율이 급격히 높아졌다. 스트레스 상태에 놓인 쥐 역시 비슷한 반응을 보였다.
